Detailed description of Rocklin Golf Club | Rocklin Golf Course, CLOSED 2015

Rocklin Golf Club, previously named Sunset Whitney Country Club,  is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in Rocklin, California.

The course was designed by Bill Bell in 1963.

The course is known for its difficulty having long par 4s, dogleg par 5s, rolling hills and sloping greens. The course’s signature hole is the 18th, a short, over-water par 3.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6607 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5507 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 4, a par-5 that plays to 541 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 18, a par-3 that plays to 128 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 3, a 439 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 18, a 128 yard par-3.

The course was closed August 2015. The course closed because the Rocklin City Council voted 5-0 to deny the development by course owners of 5 acres for 38 homes.

Charlie Gibson bought the course from as bank-owned property for $2.5 million in 2011, Gibson, also owns two newer courses in the area, Morgan Creek GC in Roseville, Calif. and Wildhorse GC in Davis, Calif. The difference between those properties and Rocklin,  is that Rocklin’s infrastructure is falling apart and the course has lost money each year since being bought at of forclosure.

Profits from the proposed development would have funded repairs on the aging course. Without that infusion from the new revenue source, there’s was no sense in continuing, according to Gibson.

Area received heavy spring rainfall making fairways very soggy. Linear layout winds through older subdivision. houses present not obtrusive. Tranquil setting isolated from street traffic with abundant wildlife. Interesting mix of holes. shortened driving range.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Ranks with the best in this price level

Sunset needs to provide layout maps for the course so you would know where the creeks crossing the fairways are and distance to them. Greens were in real good shape but fairways very dry in spots due probably to late hot summer weather.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

This was a private Country Club that has now opened the course to public play, so semi-private.

The layout of the course is excellent, as is the course condition.

The word is that the course is for sale and will be going to auction. It would be a shame if no one were to buy it. Great course!

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
